Flooring trends 2024 – designers predict these 8 styles will lead the way in interiors this year

Oct. 23, 2024

Flooring is one of the most important design elements of any home. Not only does flooring need to prioritize practicality to endure heavy daily footfall, but its style will set the tone for the rest of the space, whether that's traditional, maximal, or rustic to name just a few. There are so many flooring styles to choose from, spanning classic options that never date, to more experimental flooring that creates a vibrant and playful look. Here, we've rounded up eight flooring trends that designers expect will be the most prominent throughout 2024, catering to many different interior design styles.

1. Connect with nature through earthy tones

The designer love affair with white oak will continue but with a slight shift from the cool, white-washed tones of last year to deep golden oaks and soft taupe that boast neutral undertones. These versatile finishes translate beautifully into various design schemes with their ability to brighten spaces, emphasize coziness and create a feeling of tranquility. Light oak-inspired finishes are also noted for their ability to create the illusion of a bigger, more open space as well as provide a muted, neutral backdrop for other colors to pop. Earthy tones and warm brown seem to be taking a backseat during the reign of white oak—An introduction to neutral, mid-brown shades with subtle ashy undertones (think soft mushroom browns and smokey taupe) are putting a fresh spin on the cozy classic. This shift towards darker colors may be signaling an end to the lighter palette but we expect the new brown finishes to return with softer, more neutral tones.

2. Laminate Gets an Upgrade

Forget the shiny, plasticky laminate floors of old. Many of today’s laminate offerings have improved visuals and durability, with embossed, hand-scraped, distressed or even reclaimed textured surfaces that can be scratch-resistant. Some are even waterproof. Attractive for its usually lower price point, laminate is giving LVT a run for its money.

3. Bold patterns and geometric designs retain popularity

The resurgence of bold patterns and geometric designs in both tile and wood flooring reflects a shift towards more adventurous and expressive interior design choices. Herringbone, parquet, and chevron layouts are making a comeback, injecting spaces with energy and personality.

These dynamic patterns serve as focal points, adding visual interest and depth to rooms. Whether used in traditional or contemporary settings, bold patterns create a sense of movement and drama, transforming floors into works of art.

4. Flooring with integrated heating system

Flooring with integrated heating systems is revolutionizing the way we experience comfort in our homes. Radiant heating systems, embedded beneath the flooring surface, provide efficient and consistent warmth throughout the room, eliminating the need for bulky radiators or ductwork.

This innovative technology not only enhances the comfort level of living spaces but also offers energy-saving benefits by heating the room from the ground up, reducing heat loss and energy consumption.

5. Flooring with built-in acoustics

looring with built-in acoustics is gaining recognition as an essential element in interior design, particularly in spaces where noise reduction and sound absorption are paramount.

This innovative flooring solution is engineered to minimize sound transmission and reverberation, creating a quieter and more peaceful environment.  By incorporating specialized materials and construction techniques, such as underlayment with sound-dampening properties or acoustic backing layers, these flooring products effectively absorb and dissipate sound waves, reducing noise levels and improving overall acoustics.

In residential settings, flooring with built-in acoustics can enhance the tranquility of living spaces, making it easier to relax, concentrate, and enjoy activities without the distraction
